Regina Brett (網上關於她已屆90歲之說不確)
日前收到朋友轉來幻燈片,美文美音美景,是以美國女專欄作家 Regina Brett 的作品做主題製作的。以前也有人傳來相同主題的製作,因為記得其中的一句:別待太老才穿上紫色。當時奇怪:在老外的文化中紫色除了代表皇族的高貴還有什麼意思?這次再收到,知道原作者是Regina Brett,就去追查一番──不是對紫色特別有興趣,而是覺得內容有意思,而又對中文翻譯不滿意。
一看才知道,幻燈製作所據的50句話──就是50篇文章的標題,在網上大熱,在世界各地很受歡迎。
Regina Brett是美國克里夫蘭(Cleveland)Plain Dealer報的專欄作家,她最受歡迎的作品,是以《人生的50課》為題的一系列文章。
這個系列是她二零零六年年屆45歲時開始寫作的,是對人生經驗的小結,共寫了45篇。到了50歲,再補寫五篇,大概是想湊合為一歲一篇吧。這個專欄很受歡迎,成為所謂「互聯網現象」。文章上月因而結集出版了,書名是《God Never Blinks: 50 Lessons for Life's Little Detours》(上帝永不眨眼:人生小彎路50課)。已有十個地方購買了版權,包括台灣。
這50課有她自己的親身經歷,有身邊親友的故事,也有採訪所得。
Regina Brett 今天的成功,與她早年落拓的經歷有強烈對比。她讀大學,卻不敢出遠門,只敢挑離家不遠的讀。讀了兩年,找不到方向,不斷轉換選科。接着糊里糊塗的懷了孕,輟學了,做了單身母親。去打工,又是團團轉。想再讀書了,讀什麼?母親要她看課程簡介,她於是拿着按字母排列的簡介從A看到Z。選了,最後選了寫作,一個一個課程的讀,到30歲拿到新聞系的學位。後來又陸陸續續的邊工作邊讀碩士,與女兒高中畢業同時拿到學位,這時已40歲。「不知何去何從時,先走一小步」這一課,就是這樣得來的。她的經驗是,不要管路有多長,只看腳下好了,否則可能被前面的「千里之行」嚇怕,邁不開「始於足下」的一小步。
過了一年,竟然發現得了乳癌。這反而使她更珍惜生命、更積極面對人生,她又上了「別待太老了才穿紫色」、「你不提出要求就得不到」、「點亮浪漫蠋光……別待特別的日子才這樣做,今天就是那一天」等課。
這樣的人生曲折,的確可以寫出很多感悟來。而這個世界,又的確有很多人需要從這樣有血有肉、平凡而又深刻的感悟中汲取力量。在書店中,這些歸為「勵志」類書籍。這些書籍的銷量有周期,大抵隨着經濟周期變化,不同的是與經濟的升降成反向。金融海嘯來了,這樣書就特別好銷。
人不可太自信。這樣的道理很多屬於老生常談,但常談的事不等於常知,有時得溫故知新。真理往往平凡。
朋友傳來的版本經刪節,只有33課。我找來全本50課,翻譯在後面。這些題目有些有宗教色彩。無所謂,按自已的信仰去理解好了,「上帝」可以理解為「上蒼」。若真有天界的話,那裡該是融和世界,無分彼此。

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
人生不公平,卻尚算美好。
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
不知何去何從時,先走一小步。
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
人生苦短,不值得耗時記恨。
4. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
不要太看重自己,其實沒有誰太看重你。
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
信用咭的帳,一月一清。
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
沒必要逢吵必勝,容許各自保留意見吧。
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
找個人哭訴,比躲起來流淚更能治療傷痛。
8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
對上蒼發發脾氣沒什麼不可以,它受得了。
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
從第一次拿到工資開始,就為退休儲蓄。
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
面對巧克力,無謂徒勞抗拒。
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
與昨天妥協,以免糟塌了今天。
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
無妨讓孩子看到你哭泣。

不要與別人比較,別人的難處你不知道。
